Lithium Modules vs A Single Lithium Battery – When living off the Grid we would all like an Off-Grid Solar System that is super reliable with as little maintenance as possible – we want it to “just work”! As lithium batteries have made their mark on the market, this ideal has become closer to reality with batteries chemistries like Lithium Titanate and Lithium Ferro-Phosphate claiming theoretical battery lives from 20 to 60 years. Now all of these chemistries require a Battery Management System (BMS) for safe and reliable semi long-term use. Yes semi long-terms use! We need to understand that the BMS is an electronic circuit board or multiple circuit boards controlling the safe charging and discharging of the Lithium Battery; as well as other key controlling functions. Like the majority of electronics in today’s market the same questions are still posed; how long can we expect the BMS to last? What happens when the BMS fails? Is it a simple fix or will it take days, weeks or months? How long will the customer (you) be without power? If you have an Off-Grid Solar System designed with a diesel or petrol generator then this of course will act as your backup solution. While at first this may seem adequate, communication between manufacturers, suppliers, technicians and the customer (you) about what is wrong and how to fix your BMS can take weeks and in some cases have known to have taken months. Now a single large Lithium Battery with a single BMS may look clean and tidy and be presented in a very attractive package within shiny plastic or metallic look with pinstripes and you can admire this piece of artwork every time you walk through your garage or battery energy room. It may also meet all your daily energy requirement. Though the issue at hand here is that even these single BMS’s within or outside the warranty period can still fail and unless you have a petrol or diesel generator, you can be almost guaranteed to be without power for an undetermined length of time.
The Solution: “Lithium Modules!” Each lithium module has its own independent BMS. Should one modules BMS ever fail, then that module can be simply removed for repair or replacement as deemed necessary with generally only a slight decrease in system performance. Your Off-Grid Solar System can still be used day to day at a reduce capacity instead of a complete system shutdown that may last for weeks.
*Note to Consider: Traditional AGM Batteries or Gel Batteries (no BMS required) are still manufactured today with most reputable brands able to achieve a 10-15 year life span without too many issues. It should then be reasonable to expect at least 15-20 years of trouble free operation out of the equivalent capacity Lithium Battery. Lithium Batteries after all are always marketed as the “Superior Product”.
